How Many Security Cameras Does a Home Need?
Most homes do not need an oversized system. The right number of cameras depends on how many entrances you need to monitor and where your blind spots are.
Typical camera counts
- 2 cameras: front entry + driveway for smaller homes.
- 3 cameras: front entry + driveway + backyard access.
- 4 cameras: full perimeter coverage including side access.
Priority placement first
Cover the areas people actually use: front door, vehicle access, and side or rear entry points. A camera that points at open sky is less useful than one capturing faces at eye-level approach paths.
Avoid common mistakes
- Do not mount too high if you need facial detail.
- Avoid direct light sources at night.
- Do not ignore Wi-Fi signal at planned camera points.
Think about daily use
If reviewing footage is confusing, the system is not really working. App setup, motion zones and recording settings matter as much as camera count.
