NBN Dropouts: Router Issue or Provider Issue?
When internet keeps dropping out, many people replace the router first. Sometimes that works, but often the fault is elsewhere. Use this order to isolate the cause.
Step 1: Check modem/router logs
Look for recurring connection losses at similar times. Frequent WAN disconnects can indicate upstream issues, while local device disconnects can point to Wi-Fi setup problems.
Step 2: Compare wired vs wireless stability
- If Ethernet stays stable but Wi-Fi drops, fix wireless setup first.
- If both drop together, the issue may be modem, line or provider side.
Step 3: Eliminate local conflicts
- Update firmware.
- Swap out damaged power supplies and old patch leads.
- Reduce interference sources near router hardware.
Step 4: Gather proof before contacting provider
Capture timestamps, test results, and disconnection patterns. Clear data speeds up provider escalation and reduces support loops.
Step 5: Decide on upgrade only when justified
Replace hardware if tests show it is unstable or outdated. Avoid random upgrades without evidence.
